e-CHUG

The mission of the coalition is to provide intentional support, professional development and technical assistance for developing and continuing

  • Substance abuse prevention efforts,
  • Cultures and environments that foster a continuum of healthy choices, and
  • Strategic direction for all college and university communities in Washington State.

In spring of 2009 the coalition offered the Electronic Check Up to Go (e-CHUG) free of charge, for one year, to colleges and universities in our state. A broad range of institutions now utilize this service including six (6) community colleges, six (6) private colleges/universities, and five (4) public colleges/universities on a total of 17 campuses. Offering the e-CHUG provides many colleges and universities with a research based, NASPA recognized program, that is designed to enhance each institutions prevention programming. Consultation and technical assistance is available to help participating institutions determine how to maximize the benefits of the e-CHUG.

16 Washington State Institutions of Higher Education utilize e-CHUG through CCSAP:
  • Bellingham Technical College
  • Central Washington University

Welcome to the Washington State College Coalition electronic e-CHUG to go.

E-CHUG is an interactive, evidence based on-line intervention and feedback tool that provides students with education and personalized feedback on their own drinking patterns and risk factors. Participating institutions are able to tailor the program with resource and referral information, and where available incorporating institution specific norms.

Drawing on Motivational Interviewing (Miller & Rollnick, 2002) and Social Norms feedback theories (Haines & Spear, 1996), the CHUG is designed to motivate individuals to reduce their consumption using personalized information about their own drinking and risk factors. The e-CHUG was designed, and is updated with the most current and reliable research available.

The e-CHUG is currently in use on over 550 universities and colleges across all 50 states, in Canada, Australia and Ireland.
